In conclusion, Omori is a meticulously crafted experience that tells an engaging story and leaves a major impact upon the player. Each track has a purpose and emotion tied to it, and multiple genres of music are featured, ranging from retro to orchestral. Some tracks are whimsical and upbeat, while others incite a feeling of hopelessness and dread within the player, and each track is masterfully utilized to enhance the emotions the game is trying to convey within its story beats and exploration. Omori’s soundtrack perfectly complements the game’s central themes. Few games can make side content worth doing, more often than not these missions feel as though they are only present to pad out the games’ run time, however Omori manages to make these missions a meaningful addition that can be a nice change of pace from the game’s dark narrative. The world is littered with a good variety of side quests, which I recommend you do – not only to receive the items/gear as rewards for completion, but also to experience the heart-warming stories the side quests are able to convey. Each location in the game is unique, and no two areas feel repetitive or instil a feeling of déjà vu.

Outside of encounters, players explore a beautiful pixel-art world full of colour, mystery and intrigue. Each character is able to be happy, sad, or angry, and each emotion comes with their stat changes, along with their own strengths and weaknesses. Unlike other JRPG’s however, Omori chooses to ditch elemental status effects (e.g Stun, Sleep, Frozen) and implements a system centred around emotion. Omori’s main gameplay loop centres around a top-down perspective when exploring the overworld, and a JRPG turn-based battle system that focuses on controlling four party members, each with their own stats and abilities. What I can reveal, is the game features prominent themes of depression, suicide, and guilt, and these themes are core to the story Omori is telling. I went in completely blind without reading any online reviews (some of which mention key story beats), so I suggest you do the same. Unfortunately, I cannot provide insight into the story for fear of spoiling you of the experience. From my initial impressions, Omori managed to retain this level of investment throughout my 32-hour playthrough. From the beginning sections of the game, I found myself emotionally invested in the characters and story to a degree that I have never experienced before. I have not had a game sink its claws as deep as Omori has done to me in a long time.
